Tourists must book their trip through authorized tour operators, and a daily tariff is applied to ensure sustainable tourism practices. Plan your Bhutan tour in advance and make arrangements through a licensed tour operator.
  • Visa Requirement: Travelers to Bhutan must obtain a visa before arrival. Your tour operator will assist you in the visa application process, and a visa clearance letter will be issued, which is required to board your flight to Bhutan.
  • Bhutanese Currency: The official currency in Bhutan is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). It is advisable to carry cash in Ngultrum for your expenses, as credit cards may not be widely accepted, especially in remote areas. You can exchange foreign currency at banks and authorized currency exchange centers in Bhutan.
  • Altitude Considerations: Bhutan has varying altitudes, and some popular destinations, such as Paro and Punakha, are at moderate altitudes. If you plan to explore higher-altitude areas or go on treks, acclimatization is crucial. Take your time to adjust to the altitude, stay hydrated, and consult with your tour operator or a healthcare professional before your trip.
  • Dress Code and Cultural Etiquette: Bhutan is a deeply traditional and religious country, and it is important to dress modestly, especially when visiting monasteries, temples, and dzongs. Both men and women should avoid wearing revealing clothing. Respect local customs, remove your hats and shoes when entering religious sites, and seek permission before taking photographs, especially of religious artifacts and ceremonies.
  • Photography and Drone Usage: Bhutan is a photographer's paradise with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. However, it is important to respect privacy and cultural sensitivities. Always ask for permission before taking someone's photograph, particularly of locals. Drones are not allowed to be flown in Bhutan without prior permission from the relevant authorities.
  • Environmental Conservation: Bhutan places great emphasis on environmental conservation. Respect the environment by not littering and following designated trails during hikes and treks. Carry a reusable water bottle and avoid using single-use plastics.
  • Internet and Mobile Connectivity: While Bhutan has internet and mobile network coverage, it may not be as widespread or fast as in other countries. Be prepared for intermittent connectivity, especially in remote areas. Embrace the opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Bhutan.
  • Travel Insurance: It is highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and evacuations. Ensure that your insurance policy is valid for Bhutan and covers the activities you plan to undertake, such as trekking or adventure sports.
  • Responsible Travel: As a responsible traveler, respect the local culture, traditions, and environment. Support the local economy by purchasing locally made handicrafts and products. Follow sustainable tourism practices, such as conserving water and energy, and minimizing your environmental footprint.
